T17 · Will Anyone Want It? — Testing Your Idea Through Interviews

You have a business idea — now you need to find out if customers will actually buy it. This lesson shows how to run customer interviews the right way, and why most people get it wrong.

Lesson Overview

With the initial idea drawn out, we need to see if the customers agree with our assumption that we can make money from it. The topic of this lesson is to go through the process of testing an idea by interviewing customers.

Purpose of the Lesson

What the mentor wants to achieve in this session: participants understand why directly asking "do you like my idea?" is useless, and they learn how to conduct proper customer conversations that produce real, actionable information.

Mentor Introduction
The mentor introduces the lesson with something like: "In the previous lesson we defined our business idea. Now, before we start to build it out, we need to test it to see if it makes sense to pursue it. The challenge for today will be to talk to people — specifically with the ten people we listed as ideal customers — and get their feedback. If the feedback is positive, we will pursue it."

It is generally a good idea to know as much as possible about our customers, because that way we can adapt our product or service to fit their needs better and understand exactly how to sell it to them. We basically need to test if we got the idea right — if people will buy from us.

Worksheet: Understanding the Problem
The mentor distributes the first worksheet: "Understanding the Problem," and points out that the very first thing to discuss is the problem we are solving.
UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM — key questions
How often does it happen?
How painful is it?
Are people aware of it on their own?
What other solutions exist?
Are people willing to pay for a solution?
How many people are affected?
💡
Brainstorming ≠ Data
A short brainstorming session is okay, but the mentor should insist that any such activity is basically guesswork. It is extremely likely that we will get something wrong — this is the reason why so many ideas fail and why innovation is hard.

The Story: The Mom Test
Ето разговорът (изходен текст: Rob Fitzpatrick, The Mom Test):
The mentor tells a story. An aspiring entrepreneur gets an idea for an iPad cookbook app. Knowing he needs customer information, he starts interviewing his mom. Here is the conversation (source: Rob Fitzpatrick, The Mom Test):
Син:Son:"Мамо, мамо, имам идея за бизнес — мога ли да ти я разкажа?""Mom, mom, I have an idea for a business — can I run it by you?"
Of course, dear."
Ползваш го много?""You like your iPad, right? You use it a lot?"
Майка:Mom:"Да.""Yes."
Син:Son:"Добре, а би ли купила приложение като готварска книга за iPad?""Okay, so would you ever buy an app which was like a cookbook for your iPad?"
Майка:Mom:"Хмм.""Hmmm."
And it only costs $40 — that's cheaper than those hardcovers on your shelf."
Майка:Mom:"Ами...""Well..."
And you can share recipes with your friends, and there's an iPhone app which is your shopping list. And videos of that celebrity chef you love."
Ще има ли снимки на рецептите?""Oh, well yes honey, that sounds amazing. And you're right, $40 is a good deal. Will it have pictures of the recipes?"
Thanks mom — love you!"
Майка:Mom:"Няма ли да хапнеш малко лазаня?""Won't you have some lasagna?"

The mentor now asks: "So what just happened?"

The Annotated Conversation — Real Thoughts
The mentor now shows the same conversation, annotated with the real, honest thoughts — to show why the conversation was hopelessly misleading. If we go out to people and ask "what do you think about this idea?", there is very little chance this will be useful. Here is why:
Mom, I have an idea for a business — can I run it by you?" [I am about to expose my ego — please don't hurt my feelings.]
Of course, dear." [You are my only son and I am ready to lie to protect you.]
[Наведох те към отговора.]"You like your iPad, right? You use it a lot?" [You led me to this answer, so here you go.]
[You led me to this answer, so here you go.]
Hmmm." [As if I need another cookbook at my age.]
[Aren't apps supposed to cost a dollar?]
Oh, well yes honey, that sounds amazing... Will it have pictures?" [I have rationalized the price outside of a real purchase decision, made a noncommittal compliment, and offered a feature request to appear engaged.]
Won't you have some lasagna?" [I am concerned that you won't be able to afford food soon. Please eat something.]
⚠️
Why people mislead us (in good faith)
  • People do not like to be discouraging or hurt others' feelings — so they will usually say the idea is great.
  • People start giving advice — sometimes okay, but realistically they do not have a crystal ball.
  • People may honestly say they like it and will buy it — but this is a promise that is really easy to make.
5
Three Rules for a Good Interview
In order to do these interviews right, we should always stick to some rules that prevent our interviewees from (in good faith) lying to us:
🙊
1. Do not talk about your idea

Talk about their life. Every moment you spend describing your idea is a moment you lose the chance to learn something real.

🕰️
2. Ask about specifics in the past

Not about generics or opinions about the future. "When did you last...?" gives real data — "Would you buy...?" only gives promises.

👂
3. Talk less and listen more

If you're talking most of the time, the conversation has failed. Your job is to ask questions and absorb the information.

🚫
These answers are worthless
Information from the interviewee will usually be worthless if it consists of: compliments, fluff, hypotheticals, the future, or ideas.

The Right Conversation — example

Here is the same conversation done right:

Син:Son:"Хей, мамо, как ти служи новият iPad?""Hey mom, how's that new iPad treating you?"
Oh I love it! I use it every day."
What do you usually do on it?" [Generic question — answer probably won't be terribly valuable.]
Oh, you know. Read the news, play sudoku, catch up with my friends. The usual."
[Конкретно, в миналото — реални данни.]"What's the last thing you did on it?" [Specific, past-tense — real, concrete data.]
You know your father and I are planning that trip? I was figuring out where we could stay."
Син:Son:"Ползва ли приложение за това?""Did you use an app for that?"
Как се казва?""No, I just used Google. I didn't know there was an app. What's it called?"
Where did you find out about the other ones you use?" [Dig into interesting, unexpected answers.]
[Важна информация: традиционен PR може да работи за такива клиенти!]"The Sunday paper has a section on the apps of the week." [Key insight: traditional PR may be a viable channel for customers like her!]
By the way, I saw a couple new cookbooks on the shelf — where did those come from?" [Moving toward the topic without revealing the idea.]
They're one of those things you just end up getting at Christmas. Haven't even opened it. As if I need another lasagna recipe at my age!" [Gold dust: older people don't need another generic set of recipes.]
What's the last cookbook you did buy for yourself?" [Attack generic answers with a specific example.]
[Злато: опитни готвачи пак купуват специализирани книги!]"I bought a vegan cookbook about 3 months ago. Your father is trying to eat healthier." [Gold: experienced chefs still buy specialised cookbooks!]
✨
Why is the second conversation so much more valuable?
Such a conversation gives clear ideas of how to make the idea work. This is an exercise of asking the right questions. It takes practice, but just following the three rules above already gives really good results.

Worksheet: Validating the Solution
Only after we have understood and validated the problem can we talk about the solution. The mentor distributes the second canvas: "Validating the Solution."
VALIDATING THE SOLUTION — key questions
How is our solution different?
How is our solution exponentially better?
Do we need to teach them to buy?
What is the story we tell?
What arguments get them excited?
Did we get a pre-order?

The trick for testing is to first confirm that the problem exists in the first place. If we have already confirmed that, we focus on finding the best way to solve it. It is important to know if people are actively seeking a solution — if yes, they will be only too happy to try ours. If not, we need to find out how to convince them. If other solutions exist, we need to find their flaws or offer a significantly better deal. Our solution needs to be perceived as superior in the eyes of random customers.

Key things to be aware of when conducting this lesson so it will be successful:

🚨
Interviews are MANDATORY — not optional
It is absolutely crucial to go out and conduct these interviews. If the mentor feels the group is not motivated enough to do them during the course of the week, they should do them immediately in class over the phone to get the ball rolling.

PURPOSE

With the initial business idea drawn out, participants need to validate whether customers actually want it before building anything. This lesson walks through the process of testing an idea by interviewing customers. Participants learn why most "idea feedback" conversations produce false positives, and practice the correct interview approach: talk about the customer's life, ask about past specifics, and listen more than you speak. The session covers both a Problem Interview (Understanding the Problem canvas) and a Solution Interview (Validating the Solution canvas), culminating in four real interviews each participant must conduct before the next session.

KEY CONCEPTS
  • The Mom Test (Rob Fitzpatrick) — asking "do you like my idea?" is fundamentally flawed; people lie to protect your feelings
  • False positives — compliments, hypotheticals, and vague commitments from interviews are worthless; only concrete past behaviour counts
  • Rule 1: Don't talk about your idea — talk about their life to get unbiased information
  • Rule 2: Ask about specifics in the past — not opinions or hypotheticals about the future
  • Rule 3: Talk less, listen more — if you're talking most of the time, the conversation has failed
  • Understanding the Problem canvas — frequency, pain level, awareness, existing solutions, willingness to pay, market size
  • Validating the Solution canvas — differentiation, 10x better, teaching-to-buy, story, excitement triggers, pre-order
  • Four interviews minimum — two on the problem, two on the solution; detailed notes required
LESSON FLOW
  • Step 1 — Mentor introduction: why testing before building is essential; the 10 ideal customers exercise
  • Step 2 — Distribute Understanding the Problem canvas; discuss problem frequency, pain, awareness, existing solutions, market size
  • Step 3 — Tell the Mom Test story (iPad cookbook app + mom conversation); ask "What just happened?"
  • Step 4 — Show annotated version of the same conversation revealing the real thoughts behind each reply
  • Step 5 — Introduce 3 rules; show the correct version of the conversation with coaching annotations
  • Step 6 — Distribute Validating the Solution canvas; discuss differentiation and solution testing logic
  • Step 7 — Send participants out to conduct 4 real interviews (2 problem + 2 solution) before next session
MENTOR CRITICAL NOTE

It is absolutely crucial that participants conduct the interviews in real life — not just discuss them in class. If the group is not motivated enough to do them during the week, the mentor should initiate the first interview immediately in class over the phone to get the ball rolling.

CHECKLIST
  • Participant can explain why direct idea feedback questions produce false positives
  • Participant knows and can apply all three Mom Test rules
  • Understanding the Problem canvas completed
  • Interviews 1 & 2 conducted (problem) with notes
  • Validating the Solution canvas completed
  • Interviews 3 & 4 conducted (solution) with notes
  • Ready to share learnings with the group at next session
