What this lesson is about
Every business idea has to pass one simple test: is it financially viable? Before investing more time and energy, we need to run a basic calculation — and decide whether to actually commit to it.
🌍
(Market Size)
Market Size
Three concentric circles: everyone with the problem → those who can buy our solution → those we can actually reach. The last number limits our near-term revenue potential.
💶
Financial Planning
A simple template: start-up capital, recurring costs, cost per unit, price, and how many sales to break even. We are not aiming for precision — we are aiming for sanity.
🔍
Reality Check
Reality Check
After the numbers comes the honest question: is it realistic to sell that many units? Is the problem big enough? Is the risk worth it?
🔄
Pivot
Pivot or Continue
If the numbers don't add up — this is not a failure. Brainstorm how to change or improve the idea, or go back to the Business Model Canvas with a fresh idea. There is ample time to repeat the process.
Activities — step by step
1
Share last week's interview findings
The mentor invites each project team to talk briefly about their interview experience. Questions to discuss: Who did you talk to? How did the conversation go? Did your initial idea change? What did you learn? What is the go-to-market strategy now? Is the problem big enough? Are there enough customers with it? How did you feel during the experience?
2
Distribute and explain the "Size of Our Market" canvas
The mentor distributes the "Size of Our Market" worksheet and explains the three circles: (1) How many people have this problem — the maximum potential market size; (2) How many people can buy our solution — limited by technology, platform, or budget; (3) How many people can we reach — limited by geography and sales channels. Reaching 100% market share is practically impossible even with the smallest figure.
3
30 minutes online research — estimating market size
Teams get 30 minutes to estimate the three numbers online — statistics, industry reports, asking people in the industry. Absolute precision is not necessary — a reasonable estimate is enough. The mentor circulates and helps with suggestions on how to find data.
4
Financial Planning Template — filling in the basic economics
The mentor distributes the "Financial Planning Template" and guides teams through boxes 1–3 on the left side: (1) how much start-up capital is needed; (2) what recurring monthly costs are; (3) how much it costs to deliver one unit of the product or service. Then — price (low, medium, high) and how many units need to be sold to break even. Finally — the Reality Check box.
5
Comparison and honest discussion — is it worth it?
Teams compare the Reality Check figures with the estimated market size. Honest discussion: is this idea realistic? The mentor plays devil's advocate — solving a problem that is too small is one of the most common mistakes of entrepreneurs.
Visual model: three circles of market size
TAM
How many people have this problem
SAM
How many can buy our solution
SOM
How many we can actually reach
Pricing factors to consider
-
How much do people pay for similar products?
-
How much money does your customer segment have?
-
How much does it cost to deliver the service?
-
How much do you need to earn?
-
How much do you want to earn?
📐
Break-even точката
The Break-even Point
Deduct the variable costs from the unit price → you get the contribution per unit. Then divide the fixed costs by it → you get the number of units you need to sell to break even. Is it realistic to sell that many? Can you deliver? Is the profit large enough to justify the risk of the up-front investment?

Financial Planning Template — box structure
How much capital you need to start — list everything you need to get/buy before you can start the business. Always be frugal.
Recurring monthly costs — also known as "fixed costs" or "burn" — costs you pay regardless of whether you sell anything.
Costs to deliver one piece — materials, work, everything you pay to produce/deliver one unit of your product or service.
н.Price — think about a low, medium, and high price. Define the revenue stream: is it a one-time fee, subscription, etc.
Units to break even — for each of the three prices: how many units do you need to sell to cover your recurring costs?
Reality Check — A: units to cover initial investment? B: units to earn pocket money? C: units to earn a living? D: units to become rich? E: is the market big enough for any of these scenarios? F: do you realistically believe enough people will buy?
Mentor Notes
🎖️
Congratulate teams on completing the interviews
The mentor should really congratulate the teams that did the assignment. It is very difficult to put your heart on the line and ask strangers about your idea. Mention that a lot of further testing will be required to develop the idea, but that for now this is good enough to take the next step.
⚠️
Don't forget the costs!
Usually the participants forget about costs when filling in the template. Be sure to remind them to include everything and emphasize how dangerous it is to be wrong with this calculation.
😈
Play devil's advocate
When comparing the Reality Check with the market size, the mentor should be critical. Solving a problem that is too small is one of the most common mistakes of entrepreneurs.
💡
If the idea doesn't add up — that's fine
It is very possible that these exercises will disprove a business idea. If that happens, just have a brainstorming session how to change or improve the idea, or go back to the Business Model Canvas and repeat the whole process with a fresh idea. There is ample time to repeat this process a couple of times — once participants know the procedure, they will be able to go through it much faster on their own at home. The startup weekend will also be an opportunity for further iteration.
🔁
The process is generic
The mentor should mention that this process is generic for every single business idea. In the future the participants will probably not use the worksheet, but will be asking the same questions and thinking about the same things. This is the important learning that we want to convey.
📊
How to estimate market sizes
During Step 3, the mentor helps with suggestions on how to find data: online statistics, industry reports, asking people in the industry. At this point absolute precision is not necessary — a reasonable estimate is all we need.

duration~90 minutes
levelteen · entrepreneurship
PURPOSE
Teach teen entrepreneurs to assess whether their business idea is financially viable before committing further resources. Two structured worksheets are used: "The Size of Our Market" (TAM/SAM/SOM three-circle model) and a "Financial Planning Template" (start-up capital, recurring costs, unit cost, pricing, break-even calculation, and a Reality Check box). The lesson starts with teams sharing interview learnings from the previous session, then moves to market sizing research (30 min online), financial template completion, and a group discussion on whether the numbers make the idea realistic. If they don't, the session pivots to brainstorming changes or restarting the Business Model Canvas.
KEY CONCEPTS
- TAM / SAM / SOM — total addressable market → serviceable addressable market → serviceable obtainable market; three concentric circles, each smaller
- Financial Planning Template — six sections: start-up capital (box 1), recurring costs / burn (box 2), unit cost (box 3), price tiers (box 4), units to break even (box 5), Reality Check (box R)
- Break-even point — (recurring costs) / (price − unit cost) = units needed to cover fixed costs
- Reality Check — deliberately ambiguous questions A–F: pocket money / living / rich / market big enough / believable buy-in
- Pivot-or-continue decision — if numbers don't stack up, brainstorm changes or return to Business Model Canvas; failure here is expected and valuable
- Pricing factors — similar products price, customer segment budget, delivery cost, need vs. want income
ACTIVITIES
- Step 1 — interview debrief (who, how, idea change, learnings, GTM, problem size, customer count, feeling)
- Step 2 — distribute and explain market size canvas (three circles)
- Step 3 — 30 min online research to estimate TAM/SAM/SOM
- Step 4 — distribute financial planning template; complete boxes 1–3 first, then pricing and break-even, then Reality Check
- Step 5 — compare Reality Check vs. market size; honest group discussion; mentor plays devil's advocate
MENTOR NOTES
- Congratulate teams that did the interview assignment — it takes courage to ask strangers about your idea
- Participants consistently forget costs; emphasize the danger of an incorrect cost calculation
- Play devil's advocate during the final discussion — solving too small a problem is the most common startup mistake
- If an idea is disproved, treat it as a success: pivot brainstorm or fresh Business Model Canvas iteration
- This process is universal; future entrepreneurs will internalize it without the worksheets
MATERIALS
- "The Size of Our Market" worksheet — one per team
- "Financial Planning Template" worksheet — one per team
- Computers with internet access for online market research (30 min)
CHECKLIST
- Each team shared interview learnings
- Market size canvas distributed and three circles explained
- 30-min online research completed; TAM/SAM/SOM estimated
- Financial Planning Template filled in (all boxes including Reality Check)
- Pricing discussion held; break-even calculated for low/medium/high price
- Honest group discussion on whether the idea is worth pursuing
