Key note from the mentor
Never rush the process of brainstorming for business ideas and looking for the best one. The lesson plan deliberately leaves a month for this process.
The Model — Three Questions
Every business idea can be evaluated with three simple questions. They do not confirm that the idea is great — their purpose is to find red flags: things that absolutely disprove an idea.

(Desirability)1. Is it Desirable?

a. Does it fulfil a real need or solve a real problem?
b. Are people actually prepared to use this?

b. Do we have the capacity or knowledge, or can we surround ourselves with people who can help?
c. Are the up-front costs small enough for us to start?
🎯
How the model works
The three circles overlap in the centre — that is where the promising idea lives. If technology prevents building it, start-up costs are too high, or the market is too small — move on to something else. The goal is NOT to find the perfect idea but to remove those that clearly will not work.

Introduction: What makes an idea promising?
The mentor invites participants to share what they think are the characteristics by which we should assess business ideas. Writes suggestions on the whiteboard. Participants usually say things like: "it is profitable," "people want to buy it," "it is easy to make," etc.
2
Introducing the three questions
The mentor explains that basically only three questions need to be answered: Is it Desirable? · Is it Viable? · Is it Feasible? Draws the three-circle diagram on the board. Emphasises that these questions search for red flags — not confirmation, but disproof.
3
Practice with ideas from the ideabooks
The mentor invites participants to share ideas from their ideabooks and submit them to the three-question review. It is usually a good idea to start by suggesting an idea of your own and disproving it first — participants will be much more open to critical assessment of their own ideas. Alternative: take the class outside for a walk, stop in front of shops or other businesses, and ask the three questions.
4
Approved idea pool
All ideas that pass this quick test — meaning you do not see (yet) a reason they will not work — can be considered by the group to develop in the second part of the year. There will surely be disagreement and that is fine! Entrepreneurship is not an exact science: the only way to see if an idea has merit is to test it, and any idea can always be changed or improved.
5
Homework task
Participants go through their ideabooks and think about desirability / viability / feasibility of each idea. Next session there will be a discussion to decide on an idea to actually develop.
Required Materials
- Participants' ideabooks — they should bring them and be ready to discuss their ideas in class.
- Whiteboard and markers — for writing suggestions and drawing the three-circle diagram.
- Outdoor space (optional) — this lesson can be done outside by taking the group for a walk.

🧑🏫
Structure is at your discretion
The structure of this lesson is deliberately left up to the mentor's discretion. Perhaps the group already has a lot of ideas and the selection can start (so the activity can be done in depth), or the mentor will still need to brainstorm for quite some time. It can also happen that participants have already decided on an idea — in that case proceed through this activity quickly and move on to the next section.
🎯
Goal: 10–15 viable ideas
Work towards having at least 10–15 viable ideas within your group at the end of this session. This enables you to decide which one to work with and bring to reality.
Questions to spark ideas (if ideas are not flowing)
- What hobbies and interests do you have? (hobbies are generally great to start thinking about business ideas)
- Was there something you always wanted to try but couldn't? (e.g. travel around the world — opens up a debate how to create a way to pay for your travels through a business idea)
- Have you seen anything interesting abroad or online that would be cool to have here? (copying a concept from abroad is a perfectly good way to start a business)
- Was there anything you wanted to do when you were a kid? (examples: building a treehouse, having your own go-kart, etc.)
- Did any of you ever start a side project or built something? (most good ideas come out of those)
- Did any of you want to start a project but didn't? (great source of hobby-based ideas)
- What would be cool to have?
- If you could build anything, really anything, what would you do? (a team in a school in Slovenia wanted to send something to space so they built a probe and sent it to the stratosphere)
💡
Outdoor discussion tip
Try to find a business that is visibly failing. Ask participants whether it is viability, desirability or feasibility that is not working. Also try something in the public domain, like a traffic light — ask who is actually the customer (the public or the government). This makes the analysis much more complex and interesting.

Connecting to the previous lesson
As soon as you have found an area or a hobby, apply the timeline/problem-journey method from the previous lesson to find pain points. If a participant says they want to build X, write X in the solution part of the simple business model canvas and brainstorm the problem and the customer together.

PURPOSE
Teach participants how to evaluate a business idea using the Desirability / Viability / Feasibility (DVF) framework — the same three-circle model used in design thinking. The goal is NOT to validate an idea but to surface red flags that clearly disprove it. Participants also brainstorm to build a pool of at least 10–15 ideas for the idea-selection session in the next lesson.
KEY CONCEPTS
- Desirability — do people want this? Does it solve a real problem? Will they pay for it?
- Viability — can a sustainable business be built around this? Is there profit potential and a large enough market?
- Feasibility — can we actually build or deliver this? Does the technology exist and are start-up costs manageable?
- Red flag filtering — the framework is used to eliminate ideas, not confirm them; the only true validation is to test-drive the idea (covered in later lessons)
- Ideabook — each participant maintains an ongoing ideabook; this lesson is where ideabook ideas are first publicly evaluated
- Brainstorming triggers — hobbies, travel wishes, things seen abroad, childhood dreams, side projects, "what if" questions
LESSON FLOW
- Step 1 — Open discussion: what makes a business idea promising? (whiteboard collection)
- Step 2 — Introduce the DVF three-question model + three-circle diagram
- Step 3 — Apply the model to participant ideas from ideabooks (mentor starts with own idea to model vulnerability)
- Step 4 — Build the approved idea pool; embrace disagreement as part of entrepreneurial process
- Step 5 — Assign homework: review ideabook with DVF lens before next lesson
CHECKLIST
- Ideabooks present and ready for discussion
- DVF three-question framework introduced with diagram
- At least 3 ideas publicly analysed using the framework
- Group has pool of 10–15 viable ideas
- Homework assigned: DVF self-review of ideabook
