Lesson Overview

What is the purpose?

This lesson is set aside for the group to decide on which idea(s) to develop into actual businesses until the end of the year. It is not a structured lesson with exercises — instead the mentor gives basic guidelines to help the teams come up with a decision.

What is needed?

The participants should bring their ideabooks. Nothing else needs to be prepared in advance — this is an open and collaborative conversation.

Mentor Tip — the most important factor
By far the most important factor that influences which idea to choose is the personal preference of the team members. They should genuinely like what they are setting out to build — this will make the whole process much easier.

Activities

Step One — Bring the group together around one table

1
Open and collaborative space
Bring the participants together in an open and collaborative space. Have everyone sit around one table and invite them to open their ideabooks and share the ideas they have.
2
State the task clearly
Tell the participants that they must decide during this session on an idea they will pursue for the remainder of the year.
3
Reduce the stress
The participants should not be too stressed over this — tell them that we need a starting point to begin exploring the business world. Ideas will change dramatically, and if it does not work out, we can immediately throw it out and start anew. The participants should pick something that will be fun for them to experiment with and they should not be too attached to the outcome.
4
Congratulate and frame what comes next
U.school/Ustvarjalnik.
Once the ideas are selected, congratulate the participants and tell them that the first half of the program is complete. They can now call themselves entrepreneurs. Provide some closure for this part and then tell them that life is about to get very interesting for them. Tell them that next week the real work will start. Be sure to report all the ideas to the U.school/Ustvarjalnik office.

Guidelines for Deciding on the Business Idea

The following 8 guidelines from the lesson plan help the mentor and teams reach a good decision:

01

Every member must be in a project team. Otherwise they will miss the learning outcome. Matchmake the teams so that everyone is included.

02

Ideally 1–2 teams working on ideas. If you have more, this will be much more difficult for you as a facilitator of the process.

03

Think about team dynamics. Be prepared to spend time on this. Assume the role of a coach for the teams — especially with ambitious ideas.

04

If the group is undecided — guide them towards the idea with the most business potential.

05

Encourage hidden potential. Teams will often not be aware if they have a really amazing idea. If this happens, you should absolutely encourage them to pick that one.

06

Default towards biggest market, then default towards ideas that are the easiest to develop.

07

Avoid ideas that are too difficult to develop or have a too long development cycle.

08

The idea does not need to be a scalable startup. It can be a small business too — there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

❓
Ask about motivations
Ask the students about their motivations — they can be very different. Some might want to win the competition, others might want to earn some pocket money, some want to just get some experience. Think how their ideas fit into this.

Tips for the Mentor

🎯
Push gently towards fewer ideas
You should gently push the group towards selecting as few ideas as possible — it is much easier for you to manage the process if you have 2–3 ideas in the club at most. This will also make it easier for the students as they will have a bigger team to rely on.
⚠️
Avoid ideas students cannot develop on their own
Try to avoid a situation where students will be working on an idea that they cannot develop on their own (they want to make an app but they do not have either a coder in the team or the means to attract a coder). Ignore this if you feel you can help them find one.
💬
Liking grows with investment
Know that even if at first the students will not be too happy with the idea at hand, afterwards as they invest themselves into it, they begin to really like it.

PURPOSE

The group decides which idea(s) to develop into actual businesses for the remainder of the year. This is the pivot point between the first half of the programme (exploration) and the second half (execution). The mentor facilitates an open conversation — not a structured exercise — applying 8 decision guidelines to help teams make a good choice. Key outcome: every participant is on a team, teams have chosen 1–2 ideas, ideas are reported to U.school/Ustvarjalnik, and participants are framed as entrepreneurs entering the real work phase.

KEY POINTS
  • Personal preference is #1 — team members must genuinely like the idea they choose; this is the single most important factor
  • Low stress framing — ideas will change dramatically; this is just a starting point, not a permanent commitment
  • Fewer teams is better — 1–2 teams max is ideal for the mentor to manage; gently push towards consolidation
  • Inclusion required — every participant must be on a project team or they miss the learning outcome
  • Market size then ease — when undecided, default to biggest market, then easiest to develop
  • Small business is fine — does not need to be a scalable startup
  • Avoid unbuildable ideas — if no coder and no means to get one, avoid app ideas (unless mentor can help)
  • Motivation check — ask about individual motivations (win competition / earn money / gain experience) to align idea selection
  • Report to office — all selected ideas must be reported to U.school/Ustvarjalnik office
CHECKLIST
  • Participants brought their ideabooks
  • Open collaborative seating arranged — everyone around one table
  • Every participant shared ideas from their ideabook
  • Group decided on idea(s) by end of session
  • Every member assigned to a project team
  • Participants congratulated as entrepreneurs
  • All ideas reported to U.school/Ustvarjalnik office
  • Closure provided for first half; next week framed as "real work begins"
