Lesson purpose
This is the first soft-skills lesson. The biggest challenge aspiring entrepreneurs face is daring to do something that seems scary or impossible. The lesson shows that most things are very possible — if you know how to approach them.

Tom Sawyer and the fence
Tom ran away from home and needed money. He convinced someone to pay him to paint a fence. Then he pretended in front of his friends that it was the best job in the world — and soon they wanted to pay him for the privilege of painting it. Tom did no work and got paid twice. Sometimes exactly this kind of ingenuity is what's needed.

The challenge
A selfie with the Mayor — no appointment, no scheduled meeting, no warning. One hour, only courage and persuasion. If the Mayor is away — a photo sitting behind the Mayor's desk. The goal is not to succeed, but to try.

The discussion after
The most important part of the lesson. The mentor guides the group to extract concrete learnings from the experience — not just send students outside. Failure is OK. Not trying is not.

The story of Tom Sawyer
Tell the participants the story of Tom Sawyer and the fence. Tom ran away from home and needed money. He convinced someone to pay him to paint a fence. Then he pretended in front of his friends that it was the best job in the world — they started paying him for the privilege of painting it. He did no work and got paid twice. Sometimes exactly this kind of ingenuity is needed — particularly in the world of startups.
2
Announce the challenge — selfie with the Mayor
Tell participants they now need to show some of Tom Sawyer's skills and talent. They have one hour. They need to go outside and get a selfie with the Mayor. Reinforce that you are not kidding: the actual Mayor, right now, without an appointment. They can tell him/her whatever they wish. They need to come back before the lesson is out with picture proof. If the Mayor is not in city hall, their first option is to try to find him/her, and if that is not practical, to take a picture sitting behind the Mayor's desk.
3
Send them out — alone, with a time limit
Emphasise a concrete time limit and tell the students to be safe outside. Do not go with them — that would defeat the purpose of the activity. They need to do this on their own.
4
When they return — celebrate, then debrief
Once everyone is back, first enthusiastically congratulate them all for trying. Convey clearly that you are particularly happy they tried — succeeding is cool, but not crucial. Then gather the group in an informal circle and start the discussion with guiding questions (see the Discussion section).
Discussion questions
Gather the group in an informal circle. These questions start the conversation — give space, don't rush:
Was this difficult?
Did you expect it to be so? Did you expect to complete the task?
What approaches worked? Which did not?
What can we learn from this experience?
What lessons from this activity apply in the "real world"?
💡
How to wrap up the lesson
Wrap up with the key message: it is important to try — if you do not try, you cannot succeed. In the next sessions we will often remember this lesson, because starting any business is venturing into something new and unexplored. It is completely reasonable to be afraid — but we should lean into fear and do it anyway. This is how we grow.
Mentor notes
🧑🏫
Explain the "why" — before sending them out
This is the first challenge participants will need to overcome. Take the time to explain why we are doing this and the importance of leaning into fear, and motivate them to at least try. Your goal is that at the end of the lesson students will say: "This was very easy, we only had to try." Everyone should attempt this and your biggest success will not be if the majority accomplishes the task, but if everyone tries. Failure is OK, not trying is not. It is the role of the mentor to encourage everyone to at least try.
⚠️
If the Mayor is not available — replace the task
It might happen that it is not really possible to complete the task — for example your club meeting might take place in the evening when nobody works in City Hall, or you are located very far away. In this case, replace the task with something equally difficult (but not impossible). Some examples: get on the air of the local radio station, get a selfie with a police officer in the local jail, etc. The task should require convincing someone to complete it successfully.
🎯
The discussion is the most important part
The discussion after the activity is the most important part of the lesson. As a mentor you need to sum up what has happened and guide the participants to take learnings out of this. It is not enough just to send them outside — you need to show them this has concrete implications for their lives.
Additional tips
If you want to make things more difficult, you can prohibit participants from mentioning they are part of the entrepreneurship club and that this is an assignment.
With a large group, prepare more task variants — it gets considerably easier for the ninth person to get a selfie with the Mayor than for the first one.
Be sure to let us know what task you gave your group and how it went — if it was successful, we will include it in the lesson plan for future years.

PURPOSE
This is the first soft-skills lesson in the Teenovator/uSchool curriculum. The primary educational outcome is demonstrating that seemingly scary or impossible things are very possible if you dare to try. The classic activity is to get a selfie with the Mayor — no appointment, no warning — within one hour. Failure is acceptable; not trying is not. The debrief discussion after the activity is the most important part of the lesson. The mentor's job is to bridge the experience to real-world entrepreneurship: starting any business is venturing into the unknown, and leaning into fear is how we grow.
KEY CONCEPTS
- Leaning into fear — the principle that growth comes from acting despite fear, not in the absence of it
- Tom Sawyer ingenuity — reframing a chore as an opportunity; persuading others to want to participate; applied entrepreneurial creativity
- Trying vs succeeding — mentor must make clear that attempting is the measure of success, not the outcome
- Structured debrief — five guided questions to extract transferable learnings from the experience
- Alternative task rule — if the Mayor is unavailable, replace with an equally difficult task that requires convincing someone (local radio, police station, etc.)
- Difficulty scaling — for large groups, assign multiple task variants; later participants benefit from social proof, reducing difficulty for the group as a whole
CHECKLIST
- Notify school administration if needed; confirm Mayor availability or prepare alternative task
- Tell the Tom Sawyer story engagingly before announcing the challenge
- Send participants outside alone with a clear 1-hour time limit (do not accompany them)
- On return, enthusiastically celebrate the attempt before asking about outcomes
- Run full structured debrief: 5 guided questions + wrap-up with key message
- Send feedback to Teenovator / uSchool team about the task used and how it went
