T02 · Team Bonding — a trust-building exercise through storytelling

How do you build real trust in a team? You share your story. Participants recount childhood, youth, and the present — and turn strangers into teammates.

Getting to know each other

Purpose of this lesson

To achieve optimal group dynamics, the participants and the mentor should spend some time to get to know each other. This is particularly important for our clubs, because the participants will work together to start an actual business.

To work effectively together, team members need to build relations, show trust, and be open with each other. To achieve this, we will utilize a method that supports those things through a process of structured storytelling. Team members answer questions related to their childhood, young adulthood, and now; then weave them into a story to share with the rest of their team.

1
Explain the purpose of the exercise
That trust and openness in teams is important for effective working relationships. By sharing personal stories we are going to build those relationships. Let them know that nobody should feel like they have to share anything they don't want to.
2
Hand out materials and give instructions
Ask the participants to take three different colors of post-its and a pen. Then to spread out across the room and find a space where they are comfortable. Explain that there will be three rounds of questions. Each round will last about 5–7 minutes. They will write down answers to the questions, one per post-it.

Organise the post-its on paper
Give the group a few minutes to review their post-its and to organise them on a flipchart or their piece of paper however they choose. They can use a marker to add words or symbols. They don't have to use all of them, but they should try to make it engaging and visual. Let them know that they will each have 4 minutes to tell their story.
7
Share stories with the whole group
When everyone is ready or the time is up, gather the group into a horseshoe. Invite the participants to share their stories at the front, one at a time. If you have time you can invite the group to ask questions after each story.

🛡️
Create a safe space
It is very important to create a safe and inviting space since individuals will share personal stories. In some cases, individuals may share experiences that generate emotion in themselves and/or within the group. As a facilitator, remind participants that this is normal and welcome. If individuals become very emotional, follow-up with them individually after the session.
🎯
Mentor shares first
To ease the tension and to set an example, the mentor should share his/her story as well. That way everyone learns something new about each other.
💡
Dual purpose of this exercise
This exercise serves two purposes: the first is to create a friendly environment within the club, and the second is for the mentor to learn a lot about the students. Particular attention should be paid to their skills, accomplishments or passions, because those will serve as the basis for business ideas later.
⏰
Be mindful of time!
This lesson is relatively long, especially if you have a lot of participants. Be very mindful of time.

PURPOSE

Build optimal group dynamics by having participants and the mentor get to know each other before collaborative business work begins. The method uses structured storytelling across three rounds (childhood, young adulthood, now) to build trust and openness — the foundational conditions for effective team collaboration. As a secondary outcome, the mentor learns about participants' skills, passions, and accomplishments, which will feed business-idea generation in later sessions.

MATERIALS
  • Colored pens or markers — at least 3 different colors (one per round)
  • Post-it notes — three different colors, one set per participant
  • Sheets of paper — ideally flipchart sheets; regular notebook paper also works
ACTIVITY FLOW
  • Step 1 — Explain purpose: trust and openness enable effective teamwork; sharing stories builds both. Emphasise no one must share anything they don't want to.
  • Step 2 — Distribute 3 colors of post-its + pen. Participants spread out; 3 rounds of 5–7 min each; one answer per post-it.
  • Step 3 (Round 1 · Childhood) — A situation where you felt happy; a person that meant a lot to you; a situation where you changed / got a new view of yourself or the world. (Optionally similar questions.)
  • Step 4 (Round 2 · Young Adulthood) — A passion that fulfilled you; a situation or person who made you grow; a situation where you were challenged. (Optionally similar questions.)
  • Step 5 (Round 3 · Now) — A driving force in your life at the moment; a situation where you learned you have a talent; a failure you learned something from (private, professional, or school). (Optionally similar questions.)
  • Step 6 — A few minutes to organise post-its on paper; may add words or symbols; don't have to use all; make it engaging and visual. Inform: 4 minutes per story.
  • Step 7 — Horseshoe formation; each participant shares story at front (4 min); optionally invite questions after each story.
MENTOR NOTES
  • Safe space — Critical: stories may generate emotion. Remind group this is normal and welcome. Follow up individually with highly emotional participants after the session.
  • Model participation — Mentor shares their own story first to ease tension and demonstrate openness.
  • Dual purpose — (1) friendly club environment; (2) mentor discovers participants' skills, passions, and accomplishments — foundation for business ideas in later lessons.
  • Time — This lesson runs long with large groups. Be very mindful of the 4-min-per-person rule during story sharing.
CHECKLIST
  • Prepare colored pens/markers, 3-color post-its, flipchart/paper sheets
  • Explain purpose and create safe atmosphere before starting
  • Run Round 1 (Childhood) — 5–7 min
  • Run Round 2 (Young Adulthood) — 5–7 min
  • Run Round 3 (Now) — 5–7 min
  • Give 4–5 min to organise post-its on paper
  • Mentor shares own story first
  • Horseshoe: each participant shares story (4 min/person); optional Q&A after each
