Why does this session matter?

This is the first session of the final section of the programme: communication. You have already touched on this — when you brainstormed the short description of your ventures. Now we dive deep and prepare the most important document in the life of a young company: the one-pager.

🎯
Problem + target audience

Successfully explain what problem you are solving and who you are solving it for — clearly and concretely.

💡

📈
Traction — the most important!

Prove you are serious by showing traction: things you have built, progress you have made, sales you have closed. Traction is by far the most important element.

ЕкипTeam

Show you are capable of doing this by providing details on the team behind the idea.

Activities

1
Introduction to the communication section
The mentor points out that this is the first session of the final section: communication. You have already touched on short descriptions of ventures. Now you prepare the most important document — the one-pager. To convince someone to mentor you, partner with you, work for you or give you money, you must explain the problem, solution, traction and team — all on one page.
2
Distribute the template + review your canvases
The mentor distributes the one-pager template and clarifies all the content. Teams pull out all the canvases and worksheets they have made — all the information needed for the one-pager is already there. Important: this document must fit on exactly one page.
3
Writing the one-pager (~45 minutes)
Teams start writing their one-pager — at least one computer per project team. The mentor actively helps during the process, moving between teams, giving feedback and guiding. Leave at least 45 minutes for this activity.
4
Congratulations + why the one-pager is powerful
Teenovator / U.School
The mentor congratulates the teams on their progress and explains why the one-pager is so powerful:
  • This is the form in which investors expect information on startups to come
  • Whenever someone asks for more information about your startup, send this and save time
  • Excellent to send to potential mentors, partners or media
  • With a one-pager attached to an email it is very easy to get introductions and meetings
  • With only slight changes this can become marketing material
  • These texts are more than enough content to create a website
  • This can be an outline for the pitch
  • It will be put on Teenovator / U.School's website
  • It will be included in the information packet for all conference participants
5
Sending the document out
Teenovator / U.School.
Teams are encouraged to start sending the document to everyone they have been working with. The mentor collects the completed one-pagers and sends them to the Teenovator / U.School offices.
🏆
Traction is king
Of the four elements (problem, solution, traction, team), traction is by far the most important. Concrete numbers, real users, closed deals — even small ones — speak far louder than beautiful words.

The 1-page rule is non-negotiable
The document must literally fit on one page. This is a great exercise in learning what is truly important. If it doesn't fit — cut ruthlessly, don't shrink the font until it's unreadable.

Insist on exactly 1 page
The one-pager must actually fit one page. This is not a recommendation — it is an exercise in choosing what truly matters. Help them cut and prioritise.
💬
Everything is in the canvases
Point teams to open all the canvases from previous sessions. They don't need to invent anything new — just synthesise and format work already done.
🏠
If not finished — complete at home
If the teams are unable to complete the one-pager during the session, they should finish it at home and bring it to the next session. A completed one-pager is the team's ticket for the end-of-year conference.

Collect and send the one-pagers
The mentor must collect the one-pagers after this session and send them to the Teenovator / U.School offices, where they will be published on the website and included in the conference packet.

PURPOSE

Teams prepare a one-page description of what they do, their business model, and their traction so far. The one-pager can then be used to communicate with prospective partners, investors, media, or mentors. This is the first session of the final section of the programme (communication) and the completed one-pager is the team's ticket for the end-of-year conference.

KEY CONCEPTS
  • Four elements to persuade — problem (who + what), solution (simple + compelling), traction (most important: proof of progress), team (capability proof)
  • Traction is king — concrete numbers, real users, sales, prototypes speak far louder than descriptions
  • One-page constraint — document must literally fit on one page; exercise in prioritisation, not font shrinking
  • Use existing canvases — all information needed is already in canvases and worksheets from earlier sessions
  • Multi-use document — serves as investor brief, email attachment, mentor outreach, website content, pitch outline, marketing material, and conference packet
ONE-PAGER SECTIONS
  • Venture name / logo — instant identity
  • Problem — specific, with numbers and target audience
  • Solution — simple, anyone can understand
  • Business model — who pays, how much, revenue model
  • Traction — users, sales, prototypes, partnerships, media (concrete proof)
  • Market — size and target customers
  • Competition — competitors + competitive advantage
  • Team — names, roles, relevant skills
  • Contact — email, website, social media
MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • At least one computer per project team
  • One-pager template (printed or digital) for each participant
  • All canvases and worksheets from previous sessions
  • Whiteboard and markers
MENTOR CRITICAL NOTES
  • Insist the document fits exactly one page — this is the point of the exercise
  • Leave 45 minutes for teams to write; actively assist all teams
  • If teams cannot finish, they complete at home and bring it to the next session
  • Collect completed one-pagers and send to Teenovator/U.School offices
  • A completed one-pager is the team's ticket for the end-of-year conference
