We've gathered everything from user interviews. Now it's time to draw out the complete story — how the customer discovers the product, uses it, and becomes a satisfied, loyal buyer.

20 / 32 ✍️ Writing it out and testing it ⏱ ~60 мин 🗺️ Customer Journey Map 🎨 Storyboard

Lesson Overview

After extensive user interviewing we need to put everything together and define our product. This is a key step that will help us understand what we need to build.

The best way to define a business idea is to draw out the entire storyline of the interaction between the customer and your product in the form of a storyboard (or comic book). The entire session is dedicated to this exercise.

Why do we do this?
If you are able to complete this storyboard, it shows you have everything thought-out and are ready for the actual building of the product/service.

Activities — how the lesson runs

1
Summary — where we've been
The mentor starts by summarising the journey so far: team(s) decided on the ideas they want to pursue, thought about the problem and their customers, went outside and talked to people, learned from those interviews and improved on the idea, considered the size of the opportunity and defined their business model — and perhaps completely changed their idea on the way. All this means they know a great deal about their market.
2
Customer Journey Map —
Customer Journey Map — from stranger to loyal customer
Imagine a timeline that starts with a customer who has the problem/need you can solve, but who does not know that you exist, and ends with that same person being a satisfied, paying, returning customer. You need to show a realistic chain of events: how the customer finds out about the product, uses it, and solves the problem.
3
Storyboard with post-it notes — give it a full hour!
The mentor distributes the customer journey worksheets, post-it notes, and markers. The instruction is: "Imagine you are a screenwriter or a comic book maker. Draw out the entire story of your customer's interaction with as many details as you can. Think about a perfect interaction — one that ends with satisfaction on both sides. Make sure you show concretely how you are solving the problem for the customer, how he/she is paying for it." Give a full hour for this activity.

🎯
MENTOR NOTE — This exercise looks simple, but is actually quite challenging!
The reason for doing this is to make sure the students have really thought about everything for their idea. If they are able to complete it, this shows they have everything thought-out and are ready for the actual building of the product/service.
🤝
MENTOR NOTE — Actively help participants!
Actively help the participants through this process with your suggestions. Tell them they will be successful if they show this storyboard to a random person and he/she is able to understand the entire interaction without any further explanation.

Tips for the Mentor

You should be reminding the participants about two things at once:

💡
Expected outcomes of the exercise
The most common outcome of this exercise is participants finding out about a lot of things they have not considered yet. This is exactly what we want to achieve.

PURPOSE

After extensive user interviewing, teams synthesise everything they have learned into a Product Story — a visual storyboard (comic-book format) that maps the full customer journey from first awareness ("user does not know the product exists") to a satisfied, paying, returning customer. The exercise validates that the team has thought through all aspects of their idea and is ready to start building.

KEY CONCEPTS
  • Customer Journey Map — a timeline from stranger to loyal customer showing all touchpoints
  • Storyboard / comic-book format — visual narrative of product interaction, filled with post-it notes
  • Product Journey Map template — three sections: What is the product? / List the features / What is the promise?
  • Readiness test — storyboard must be self-explanatory to a random person with no further explanation
  • Gap discovery — common outcome is finding unconsidered aspects; this is the intended result
MATERIALS
  • Multicolored markers
  • Post-it notes
  • Printouts of the Customer Journey Map worksheet (one per participant)
LESSON FLOW
  • Step 1 — Mentor summarises the journey so far (ideas, problem, interviews, business model)
  • Step 2 — Introduce the Customer Journey Map: from unknown product to loyal customer
  • Step 3 — Teams draw storyboard with post-its; mentor actively assists; full 60 minutes
MENTOR NOTES
  • Exercise appears simple but is challenging — it proves completeness of thinking
  • Actively help teams; success criterion: storyboard understood by any random person without explanation
  • Remind teams: great customer experience AND low costs / small operations
  • Most common outcome: teams discover things they had not considered — this is the goal
