Lesson Overview

Today's lesson explores how the world works today and how it is different from a world 20 years ago. We look for key trends and have a stab at predicting the future. This is the first of three lessons dedicated to teaching the background knowledge needed for business idea generation.

🌐
The World Today vs. 20 Years Ago

What has changed in business, technology and daily life? We look at how the world looks from an entrepreneur's perspective.

📈
Trend Mapping

Participants co-create a map of key trends: last year, this year, and three years ahead — then identify patterns and discuss relevance.

💡
The Idea Book

We start the habit of writing down every idea — the more the better. Quantity beats quality in the early stages of idea generation.

📋
What You Need
A presentation (available in the mentor kit), projector and computer. Colored markers, post-it notes, A4 paper. A long empty wall with the area in front of it cleared.

Activity: Trend Mapping

The purpose of this session is to create a shared view of trends in the recent past, present, and future. It runs in two blocks: a short presentation and an interactive post-it activity.

1
Video + discussion: What does business look like today?
Show the video about the way business looks like today (available in the mentor kit). This kickstarts a discussion about the possibilities available to students today. The mentor can add a short personal talk about a business idea they find fascinating.
2
Prepare the wall
Divide a long wall roughly into three equal sections with tape. On three sheets of A4 paper, write three time periods with a thick marker — e.g. 2024, 2025, 2026–2028. Stick them up at the top of each section in chronological order.
3
Give instructions to participants
Bring the group to stand in a horseshoe facing the wall. Each person gets a marker and post-its. The task: write a significant "thing" (trend, technology, political movement, behavioral shift, medical development, etc.) on a post-it — one per post-it. Then walk up to the wall, stick it up and read it aloud. There's no need to wait your turn. The aim is to fill the wall in 15 minutes.
4
Fill all three sections
Start with last year (5 minutes), then move to this year, then to 5 years in the future. Support the group to keep the pace up and encourage everyone to participate. If the speed is dragging, ask relevant questions or make suggestions.
5
Find patterns and themes
Keep the group in front of the wall. Ask them to look for patterns and common themes in each year. If time allows, create subgroups to sort the trends under each year and prepare a summary of the key patterns.

The Idea Book

The last step of this lesson introduces a very important concept in the entrepreneurship clubs — the Idea Book. It will be an ongoing theme until the very end of the year.

💡
Key truth: quantity beats quality
When it comes to business ideas, quantity beats quality. Even if the idea is crazy, undeveloped or simply bad — write it down. You'll need it later.

Why keep an Idea Book?

⚠️
Rule: Write EVERYTHING down
Participants should absolutely disregard any issues about practicality of the ideas. Stupid, small or impossible — doesn't matter, write it down. Discipline yourself to write every idea immediately; always carry a notebook or use a note-taking app on your smartphone.

Group Reflection and Discussion

After the trends activity, run a group reflection. Encourage participants to speak from their personal experience, using "I" rather than "we".

🗣️
Good discussion prompt questions
How was that exercise?
What have I learned?
How do I feel about the past, present, and future?
What does this mean for my future? The areas that interest me? My job prospects?

An important truth about ideas

Participants are often reluctant to share ideas with the rest of the group. This comes from a misunderstanding of the realities in business. An idea on its own is almost certainly not unique — someone else has very likely come up with the same concept. What makes an idea or a business valuable is the execution. It therefore makes a lot of sense to discuss it with the rest of the group and seek as much help and feedback as possible.

Mentor Notes

🧑‍🏫
Include introverts
As this is a fast, often loud activity, soft-spoken or introverted participants may slip into the background, especially when the group is large. Be sure to lift the softer voices and encourage those who have not participated.
🎯
Narrow the focus if needed
The focus of the activity can be narrowed to a specific theme or industry — for instance, only looking at technology trends, or trends in the fashion industry.
📓
Idea Book — introduce it early
It is very hard to just create a business idea on the spot, especially if you have a deadline. This is why you should introduce the Idea Book now and return to it whenever you need a fresh start. You might even award the person with the most ideas in their Idea Book with a small prize.
🔑
Why this lesson matters
This is the first of three lessons dedicated to the background knowledge needed for business idea generation. Participants need to understand the realities of the business world to be able to contribute their own ideas. Don't skip it!

PURPOSE

Lesson 8 of 32 creates a shared view of the world today and how it has changed over the past 20 years. It is the first of three lessons building background knowledge for business idea generation. Participants map key trends (past, present, near future), identify patterns, and discuss personal relevance. The session closes by launching the Idea Book habit — collecting every idea regardless of quality, for a minimum of 6 weeks.

KEY CONCEPTS
  • The world today vs. 20 years ago — exploring change through an entrepreneur's lens; video kickstart from mentor kit
  • Trend mapping activity — co-created wall with post-its across three time sections (last year / this year / 3 years ahead); 15 minutes; identify patterns and themes
  • Quantity beats quality — the fundamental insight for early-stage idea generation; ideas alone are worthless, execution is what matters
  • The Idea Book — always carry a notebook or note-taking app; write every idea immediately; mix-and-match mashups; return with fresh eyes; ongoing habit until end of club
  • Sharing ideas is safe — ideas on their own are almost certainly not unique; execution makes the value; sharing maximises feedback and development
CHECKLIST
  • Room prepared: long wall, tape dividers, three year labels, markers and post-its per participant
  • Video shown and short discussion run on business opportunities available to young people today
  • Trend-mapping activity completed: last year → this year → 3 years ahead; wall filled in 15 minutes
  • Patterns and themes identified; subgroups sorted trends if time allowed
  • Group reflection held; personal "I" framing used; quiet participants encouraged
  • Idea Book introduced; rules explained; habit assigned for minimum 6 weeks
MENTOR ALERTS
  • Introverts — actively lift quiet voices during the fast-paced wall activity
  • Idea-sharing reluctance — explicitly address the myth that sharing an idea is risky; execution, not the idea, creates value
  • Idea Book continuity — return to idea books in subsequent sessions; allow participants to share interesting ideas with the group
  • Prize incentive — optional: offer a small award for the most ideas collected in the Idea Book
